The main goal of any web business is to have its web page listing appear on the first or second page of any search results looking for businesses in their category. One way to make sure that happens is to run paid ads. The Google search engine developed a whole program called Adwords. Now other main search engines, such as Yahoo, have similar programs.Adwords is a Google-invented program. The word technically means the words that a researcher uses to do a search on Google’s search engine. A collection of such words applicable to a businesses’ Web site is established between the business and Google, and are called, "keywords." The actual words are basically determined from a Google survey of the company’s words used throughout the company’s website. However, the company can offer to pay for other keywords it believes are related. The company’s ad will be displayed when a user uses any of these words. After that, The company then negotiates a “pay per click” cost for a small ad. When a user uses any of the agreed upon keywords in his search, the ad will appear as a "Sponsored Link." Sponsored links are shown on the top or right side of the first two pages of the search result. Whenever someone places a mouse cursor over the ad and clicks the left button to go to the company’s web site, the company gets billed for the ad. The position ordering of paid listings depends on competitive advertisers’ PFP (Pay For Placement) bids and the “quality score” of all ads shown for a given search. The quality score is calculated by historical CTR (click Through Rates) and the relevance of an advertiser’s ad text, adwords and the advertiser’s webpage - as determined by Google. The CTR means the percentage of clicks an ad gets compared to the times their "Sponsored Link" appears. PPC (Pay-Per-click) is the price the company pays for each click; current prices range from a few cents up to $70 or more. Google will also place the company’s ad on other company’s websites. See the Adsense section for details of that program. See also, the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) section for information on how to obtain first-page search results and discover new “niche” opportunities by manipulation of keywords.
