Your web page is your presence on the web, and it can be of great use in letting the world know who you are and what your business is. Designed properly, search engines can read it and make sure it is listed in all applicable searches by Internet users. Designed improperly, it will never be noticed.

There are three major no-nos that newbies should be aware of, as follows:

> Designing on a PC that is attached to the Internet via DSL. According to information on the web on November 17, 2007, Dial-up ISP users totaled 53% of the users and 46% used DSL. Why is that importnat to web page design? It is very important for one very good reason — uploading a web page with a lot of graphics takes a hell-of-a-lot-of-time for dial-up users! They won’t be patient, and he or she will leave before they see your site. And that is a loss of 53% of the market. If you are on DSL, your tests on the web as you develop your site will not reflect what a dial-up user sees.

>The second no-no is related to avoiding too much graphics, or having graphics contain important web page information. Search engines cannot read what info is inside those graphics, so the information in the graphics is lost to the search engine seeking if your web page matches a searchers requested keywords. Small graphics, such as our buttons on our master page, do have an ALT message stating the title, which the search engines can read. Our Small “welcome man” graphic has the same name as our web page name, which reinforces our webs content to the search engines.

>The third no-no concerns the use of banners that advertise other companies in which you have an interest. Many marketing Gurus will tell you that most viewers react negatively to banners because it is a cold and indifferent way to the sale page. Much better to refer to the sale-page company in your friendly way, suggesting the user might find the sight useful.

There are many many things to consider as you design your website. Many of these are covered in the free Search Engine Optimization Made Easy Report, which you can download from our SEO section.

We are not the best experts to advise you on how to build your site, namely because years ago we learned by saving a web page we liked and studying how it was put together, plus learning the HTML codes. So, we haven’t experimented with the software that is available today for designing a web page. There are software programs that are fast to make your page without knowing the tools. We do, however, suggest you use a software that uses the HTML and possibly CSS tools, because, if you stay on the internet in business for any length of time, you will be putting up several web sites and flash pages. Knowing the language will be very helpful and time-saving. I did download the Free web page design program listed in our reference section on the left, and felt that it was nicely organized, and probably a good one to try first.

As with most operations on the web, there are many software programs to help you build your site. Some do just that, others offer support above and beyond such as fine-tuning for SEO, Adsense and Adword programs. The choice is yours, some are free and some are expensive. We listed the ones we come across most often in our surfing, so our list should be pretty representative.

I do suggest that your design has a column space provided forAdsense ads. The ads provide additional income and, because Google wants to make more money, they help to bring visitors to your site.
